From the end of September to the beginning of October this year, the Polish Bishops will go to the Vatican for their visit “ad limina Apostolorum” (lit. to the thresholds of the Apostles). Due to the unstable sanitary situation, the precise dates of the visit are not yet known. They will be determined and announced later.
The Diocesan and Auxiliary Bishops, as well as Emeritus Bishops, in addition to the pilgrimage to the tombs of St. Peter and Paul and meetings with Pope Francis, will also visit the Congregations and Councils of the Holy See. As the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation “Pastores Gregis” emphasizes, the primary purpose of the visit “ad limina Apostolorum” is to strengthen the means of communion between the Bishops and the Chair of St. Peter.
During the “ad limina” visit, the country’s Bishops will go on pilgrimage to the tombs of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and in the Vatican, they will present reports on their dioceses to the Pope. According to canon law, these meetings are organized every 5 years. However, due to the pandemic, they have been suspended for some time.
The previous visit of Polish Bishops to the Vatican took place from 1 to 8 February 2014, before John Paul II’s canonization and the World Youth Day organized in Krakow. Pope Francis, in his speech to the Polish episcopate, devoted a special reflection to the family and young people, and he drew attention to the potential of the Church in Poland.
