I am asking Merciful God for eternal life for the Dead and for the comfort for all those who mourn – wrote  Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, in condolences after the death of Pawel Adamowicz, mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk.

Pawel Adamowicz was attacked on stage on January 13, while attending the Great Orchestra of Christmas charity. He was taken to hospital for stab injuries but he died a day after being attacked.

“The assassination of the Mayor of Gdansk and his death shocked the entire society, believers and non-believers, people with different social and political views. In these difficult moments, we all need unity and community. We need common prayer and reflection so that similar events will never happen again” – wrote Archbishop Gadecki.

Thousands attended vigils across Polish cities on Monday evening, including in Gdansk.
