Marriage and family, migrations, World Youth Day in Panama were the themes of the meeting of the Contact Group of the Polish and German Episcopates, which took place on May 14-16. This year, members of the Group met in Paradyż at the invitation of Bishop Tadeusz Lityński, Ordinary of Zielona Góra-Gorzów.

This year, the Contact Group of the Polish and German Episcopates dealt with such issues as marriage and family, migration, World Youth Day in Panama, Youth Synod, 100th anniversary of Poland’s regaining independence, Polish-German project on refugees developed by Caritas Deutschland and Caritas Polska.

In addition, both sides agreed that they still want to develop the activities of the Maximilian Kolbe Foundation. It aims to strengthen efforts leading to reconciliation in Europe.

The meeting of the Contact Group was attended by: from the Polish side – the Metropolitan of Warsaw Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, Ordinary of Gliwice Bishop Jan Kopiec, Ordinary of Zielona Góra-Gorzów Bishop Tadeusz Lityński, and Fr. Dr. Jarosław Mrówczyński, deputy secretary general of the Polish Bishops’ Conference and secretary of the Group from the Polish side; from the German side – Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, Metropolitan of Cologne, Ordinary of Bamberg Archbishop Ludwig Schick, Ordinary of the Diocese of Görlitz Bishop Wolfgang Ipolt and Dr. Jörg Lüer – secretary of the Group from the German side.

The Contact Group of the Polish and German Episcopates has been working regularly since 1995. Its task is to exchange the Church’s experiences in both countries, joint initiatives of episcopal conferences and their respective bodies.
