The Sunday of the Word of God is a spark that appears and should stir fervor and love for Sacred Scripture without which we cannot understand Christ – said Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, speaking about the upcoming Sunday of the Word of God, which this year falls on the 24 of January.

The President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference urged bishops, priests, men and women religious, and lay people who are members of movements and associations to take part in The Sunday of the Word of God. “The Church grows out of the Word Incarnate, the person of Jesus Christ, but Sacred Scripture is an introduction and a commentary to the person of Jesus Christ,” he stressed.

Archbishop Gądecki said that the Word of God should be read and contemplated all year round.  He urged people, during this special Bible Sunday, to turn their attention to the Word of God, the homily, as well as the  liturgical celebration and the procession, during which the Gospel Book is solemnly carried in.

This year, the Sunday of the Word of God will be celebrated for the second time. It was instituted by Pope Francis with a Motu proprio  “Aperuit illis” to be held on the third Sunday of Ordinary Time. This day is a means to help us become more profoundly aware of the importance of Sacred Scripture for our lives as believers, beginning with its resonance in the liturgy, which places us in living and permanent dialogue with God.  A note released by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments points out that “through the proclaimed biblical readings in the liturgy, God speaks to his people and Christ himself proclaims his Gospel.”

Responding to Pope Francis’ decision, the Holy John Paul II Bible Work group in Poland, headed by Professor Fr. Henryk Witczyk, Ph.D. habilitated, developed supporting materials for The Sunday of the Word of God to be used during eucharistic celebration of the Liturgy of the Word, the Prayer of the Faithful, and Lectio Divina of the Gospel according to Mark (1:14-20) that will be read in churches. The materials will be uploaded on the Bible Work’s website www.biblista.pl.

The Bible Work in Poland has also been organizing the Bible Week and the Nationwide Reading of Sacred Scripture for over ten years. This year, the 13th Bible Week will be organized on 18-24 April, and the Fifth Nationwide Reading of Sacred Scripture on 18 April 2021.
