This week in the Church in Poland was rich in many significant events on the international level.
On the 1st of September was 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, in which more than 50 million people were killed. The commemoration, with the participation of the leaders from all over the world, took place in Warsaw, capital of Poland. On this occasion, Polish and German bishops issued a special statement in which they appealed for common actions for peace and unity. President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki said: War is a defeat of humanity, which rejected God.
On the 2nd of September in Poland, more than 4 million children and youth started a new school year. On this day, bishops and priests celebrated special Masses for pupils, their parents, school teachers, and staff.
According to the decision of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, approved during the Plenary Assembly in June this year in Świdnica, at the beginning of September, at the Secretariat of the Bishops’ Conference in Warsaw, the Office of the Delegate of the Polish Episcopate for the Protection of Children and Youth will begin its activities. Since March 2019 this function has been performed by Archbishop Wojciech Polak, Primate of Poland.
The week in the Church in Poland closes with the National Pilgrimage of the Work of Spiritual Adoption to the Shrine of Jasna Góra. People who join this initiative pray for 9 months for the unborn child whose life is in danger and for child’s parents. Spiritual Adoption started in Poland in 1987 and was supported by St. John Paul II and Polish bishops. Thanks to the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people in Poland – as we believe – many children were born.
