On Thursday, September 20, the representatives of the National Police Headquarters and the Church in Poland met in the Secretariat of the Polish Bishops’ Conference in Warsaw to promote together road safety and encourage pedestrians to join the “Pass it on” campaign. As the organizers explain, the point is to give each other reflectors with dedication, so that they remind us of the need for safety. “Give your family and friends a reflector as a gift. Reflectors mean simply life”, said Fr. Paweł Rytel-Andrianik, spokesman of the Episcopate.
The goal of the #PodajDalej action consists above all in reminding to pedestrians moving along the road after the twilight about the need to use reflective elements in a visible way for other road users. “In general, a pedestrian moving along the road after dark outside the built-up area is obliged to use reflective elements in a visible way for other road users, unless he moves on a road only for pedestrians or on the sidewalk”, explains Police. The organizers of the action advise that the reflectors should be placed as low as possible, e.g. at the height of the knees, hands, around the center of the chest and back, because they are the most visible there.
“In this autumn-winter weather, let’s dress in bright colors and wear reflectors. Most people who die on the roads are older people. For the driver, the visibility of a person with a reflector is 150 meters”, said Insp. Mariusz Ciarka, spokesman of the Chief Inspector of Police.
The action as any preventive action related to road safety aims at raising public awareness, shaping correct attitudes and behaviors among road traffic participants, as well as building a sense of co-responsibility for their own and others’ safety.
