„The outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, April 19, 1943, was a cry for life, freedom, identity and place in the world for the Jewish people. The anniversary of this uprising calls for a prayer for peace, especially in Ukraine,” stressed Bishop Rafał Markowski, Chairman of the Committee for Dialogue with Judaism of the Polish Bishops’ Conference.
He pointed out that the heroism of Warsaw Jews, who were doomed to extermination by Nazi Germany, resulted in the rebirth of the nation years later, although the uprising was not won.
„We remember with deep respect and reverence those who heroically resisted evil, knowing that the enemy was incomparably stronger militarily. Their story is like the Gospel seed which, when it dies, falls into the ground and yields a rich harvest (cf. Jn 12:24). Thanks to this sacrifice, the Israeli nation survived and lives. On the 79th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising we pray for all those who died in the middle of Europe, defending their right to life, dignity and freedom,” said Bishop Markowski.
He added that nowadays the people of Ukraine are fighting for their freedom and identity. „The nation is paying a enormous price for its will to survive. It is a great pain that humanity has not taken to heart the tragic lesson of World War II. We continue to pray for peace. The blood of the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising calls for it,” emphasized the Chairman of the Committee for Dialogue with Judaism of the Polish Bishops’ Conference.
