An informative brochure providing an outline of Polish history will be distributed among pilgrims who will come to Poland for an international gathering of Catholic youth in the last week of July.
The booklet, prepared by Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focuses on Polish history during World War II, and it also briefly mentions Polish saints.
"The idea is that all those coming to Poland for World Youth Day could familiarise themselves with Poland in a nutshell," one of the authors of the booklet, Maciej Korkuc from the IPN’s Krakow branch, has told PAP. "Young people arriving in Poland for the event will come into contact with Polish culture, its historic heritage and symbols, and they will also walk in the footsteps of great historical figures here. We want to make it easier for them to understand what they will be seeing."
The booklet will be handed out for free to pilgrims during World Youth Day, which will be held in and around the southern city of Krakow July 26-31. The booklet will be available in the nine official WYD languages, Polish, English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian. It will also be distributed in sites visited by WYD pilgrims such as the Auschwitz Museum in the city of Oswiecim and the John Paul II Museum in Wadowice. (PAP)
