I express my great gratitude to the Holy Father Francis for the new cardinal for Poland! It is a great joy for our Church - the Polish Bishops' Conference President wrote on his Twitter profile. Archbishop Stanislaw Gądecki also congratulated Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś on his appointment to the cardinal dignity.

"I express my great gratitude to the Holy Father Francis for the new cardinal for Poland! It is a great joy for our Church. In turn, I sincerely congratulate Cardinal Grzegorz Rys and wish him the power of the Holy Spirit and the help of the Mother of God on the path of pastoral ministry!" reads Archbishop Stanislaw Gądecki's post on social media.

Metropolitan of Lodz Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś was among the 20 new cardinals whose names were announced today by Pope Francis.

The news of Archbishop Ryś's announcement as a cardinal reached the President of the Polish Episcopate on his way back from Lutsk, Ukraine, where he prayed for the victims of the Volhynian massacre and Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation during the "Forgiveness and Reconciliation" pilgrimage.
