The celebrations commemorating those murdered during the massacre of Wola began with a ceremony in front of the monument located in the square of remembrance at the fork of Solidarności Avenue and Leszno Street. It commemorates the inhabitants of Wola murdered in the first days of August 1944.
It was attended by representatives of state and local government authorities, veterans of the Second World War, including Warsaw Insurgents, and residents of the capital. There were also present representatives of the Institute of National Remembrance and the Warsaw Rising Museum. A delegation from the Secretariat of the Polish Bishops' Conference also took part in the ceremonies.
The massacre of the residents of the capital's Wola district lasted from 5 to 7 August 1944. According to various estimates, between 40,000 and 60,000 residents of the district were killed in mass executions.
The Monument to the Victims of the Wola Massacre, which is also known as the Monument to the Fifty Thousand, was unveiled in 2004. In 2010, the Council of Warsaw established 5 August as the Day of Remembrance of the Residents of Wola.
