Pope Leo XIV is a great gift to the Church. This is a man who is likely to bring an enormous wealth of new content to what will flow from the lips of the Successor of St Peter – said the spokesman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Fr Leszek Gęsiak SJ, in a commentary following the election of Pope Leo XIV to the See of St Peter.

The Spokesman of the Polish Bishops' Conference stressed that Pope Leo XIV is a great gift to the Church. "This is a man who is likely to bring an enormous wealth of new content to what will flow from the lips of the Successor of St Peter" – he pointed out.
Fr Gęsiak pointed out that this is the first Pope to come from North America. "This is a Pope who knows foreign missions, he was a missionary for many years, he was also a bishop there. This is a man who has worked in the Roman Curia, knows its meanderings, having been Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops" – he outlined.
He added that Leo XIV is a man of great humility. "A man who, with tears and emotion, accepted the enormous burden that rests on the Pope. It is he who will now carry on his shoulders the responsibility for the whole Church, for all the most important decisions, for the direction of its further development and evangelisation. He will be the one to show how to be a good shepherd" – acknowledged the Spokesman of the Polish Bishops' Conference. "And that he was a good shepherd, let these words that he also told us testify: that the most important thing is that the peace of Christ remain among us" – Fr Gęsiak noted.
The Spokesman of the Polish Bishops' Conference encouraged people to thank God for Pope Leo XIV and surround him with generous prayers.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost OSA was elected by conclave on 8 May 2025 as the 267th Pope and took the name Leo XIV.
