Meeting of the contact group of the Polish and German Bishops' Conferences began in Cologne

The annual meeting of the contact group of the Episcopates of Poland and Germany is taking place in Cologne from 13-15 May this year. The host of the meeting is Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, Metropolitan of Cologne.

The main theme of the meeting centres around the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the exchange of letters between the Episcopates of Poland and Germany, which will take place in autumn this year, in Wrocław. The central celebrations will be hosted by Archbishop Józef Kupny, Metropolitan of Wrocław.

The meeting will also address issues concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine. On the part of the German Bishops‘ Conference, members of the contact group will also present the issue of guidelines for pastoral care in the mother tongue in Germany, and on the part of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, changes in the organisation of religious education in public schools.

Between the working sessions, members of the group will visit Cologne Cathedral as well as the archdiocesan historical archives.

The contact group meeting is attended by: from the German side – Metropolitan of Cologne Card. Rainer Maria Woelki, Ordinary of Görlitz Bishop Wolfgang Ipold, Head of the Department of Universal Church and Migration of the German Bishops' Conference Ulrich Pöner, Secretary of the contact group Markus Grünn; from the Polish side – Metropolitan of Lublin and Chairman of the Team of the Polish Bishops' Conference for Contacts with the German Bishops' Conference Archbishop Stanisław Budzik, Ordinary of Zielona Góra and Gorzów Bishop Tadeusz Lityński, Ordinary of Płock Bishop Szymon Stułkowski, Deputy Secretary General of the Polish Bishops' Conference and Secretary of the Contact Group Rev. Jarosław Mrówczyński, and Prof. Grzegorz Chojnacki from the University of Szczecin.
