The Office of the President should unite us all, because the president is a symbol of national unity, and also because this is the task entrusted to him; to be the president of all Poles, above any divisions – said Archbishop Adrian Galbas SAC, Metropolitan of Warsaw, in his homily during Holy Mass for the Homeland and the newly sworn-in President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki. The Eucharist was presided over by the Primate of Poland, Archbishop Wojciech Polak, and concelebrated by representatives of the Polish Bishops’ Conference and the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi.

At the beginning of the Eucharist, the Primate of Poland, Archbishop Wojciech Polak, pointed out that on the feast of the Transfiguration, we were invited ‘to pray for our beloved Homeland and, through our common prayer offered here in the Archcathedral of Warsaw, to accompany the President, who is officially taking office today.’
Metropolitan of Warsaw Archbishop Adrian Galbas SAC pointed out that the Office of the President should unite us all, ‘because the president is a symbol of national unity, and also because that is the task entrusted to him: to be the president of all Poles, above any divisions.’ ‘We would very much like your presidency to be like that. May you not show favouritism, but lead us all with calm and wisdom, obeying the law and teaching us to obey it,’ he admitted.
Archbishop Galbas recalled that ‘in this cathedral, our ancestors thanked God for being able to rise above national divisions and adopt the first constitution in modern Europe.’
The hierarch noted that each of us has certain goals for a specific period in our lives. ‘But there must also be an ultimate goal, there must be an answer to the question, what is the point of all this, why am I living on this earth at all? And today's feast reminds us of the fundamental answer of Christ and the Church: I live so that, after a good and useful earthly life, I may be with God forever, see Him face to face and enjoy the community of the saved. We must never forget this, because it would undermine the foundations of our faith and make everyday life very difficult,’ he said.
Addressing President Karol Nawrocki, Archbishop Galbas acknowledged that he certainly already has goals set for the first days of his presidency, for the first hundred days, for the first year and for the first five years. ‘That is good, it will protect both you and us from chaos. However, as a believer, please never lose sight of the ultimate goal of life, which is eternity with God, before whom everyone will have to give an account of their deeds and omissions. When we keep this in mind and in our hearts, it is easier to avoid many mistakes and sins, especially the sin of pride,’ he pointed out.
‘As a community of believing Poles, we congratulate you on your election to the honourable office of President of the Republic of Poland. Today, we surround you with our presence and our kindness, and we pray for you, for your family and for our beloved Homeland, which you now lead,’ emphasised the Metropolitan of Warsaw.
