Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk passed away
On the night of 20 August 2025, at the age of 86, Archbishop Emeritus Józef Kowalczyk passed away. For many years, he was the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland (1989-2010), and from 2010 to 2014, he was Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland. His death was announced in Gniezno by the bell of St. Adalbert.

Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk passed away during the night of 20 August in a hospital in Tarnów, where he had been in serious condition for over three weeks.
Funeral ceremonies will be held for the late Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk will be held on 28 and 29 August this year. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Gniezno Cathedral on 29 August at 11:00 a.m. and will be presided over by Archbishop Wojciech Polak, Primate of Poland.
