Secretary General of the Polish Bishops’ Conference Visits Georgian Embassy Following the Death of Patriarch Ilia II

The Secretary General of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Marek Marczak, paid a condolence visit to the Embassy of Georgia to the Republic of Poland following the death of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, head of the Georgian Orthodox Church. He was accompanied by the spokesman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Fr. Leszek Gęsiak SJ.

On behalf of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Marczak conveyed condolences to the Ambassador of Georgia to Poland, Diana Zhgenti. In the condolence book he wrote: “I express my sincere condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church and to the entire Georgian Nation.”

The Secretary General of the Polish Bishops’ Conference also emphasized that “the immense spiritual and moral authority that the late Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II possessed, both in Georgia itself and beyond its borders, clearly shows what a great loss his passing to the Father’s house is for all those who were able to experience his witness of faith, authentic piety, and wisdom.”

Bishop Marek Marczak assured of the prayers of the Polish Bishops’ Conference for the deceased Patriarch.

Patriarch Ilia II died on 18 March at the age of 93. He had led the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1977.
