29 June: Pope will impose palliums on three Polish metropolitans

On the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June, Pope Leo XIV will bless and impose palliums on new metropolitans from around the world. Among them will be three metropolitans from Poland: Archbishop Adrian Galbas SAC, Archbishop Wiesław Śmigiel and Archbishop Zbigniew Zieliński.

On 13 September 2024, Archbishop Wieslaw Śmigiel was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień, Archbishop Adrian Józef Galbas SAC became the new Metropolitan of Warsaw on 4 November last year, and on 19 March 2025, the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland announced the decision of the Holy Father Francis to appoint Archbishop Zbigniew Zieliński as Metropolitan Archbishop of Poznań. The archbishops assumed their metropolitan sees successively: 26 October 2024, 14 December 2024 and 1 May 2025.

The new metropolitans from Poland will receive their palliums from the Holy Father Leo XIV this Sunday, 29 June, among a group of metropolitans from all over the world. The solemn Mass, during which the Pope will bless the palliums and personally place them on their shoulders, will begin in St Peter's Basilica in Rome at 9.30am.

The pallium is a white woollen belt adorned with crosses worn over the chasuble. It symbolises the special bond between the Pope and metropolitans around the world.
