Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (Commissio Episcopatuum Communitatis Europensis) was established in 1980, under the direct inspiration of the Holy See. Its task is to strengthen cooperation among the different pastoral ministries in Europe, dialogue with the institutions of the European Union with respect to the formation of European legislation, and monitoring European policy.

Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (Consilium Conferentiarum Episcoporum Europae) was founded in 1971 by the Secretariat Council, which has its seat in the St. Gallen, Switzerland. According to the statutes of 1993, the Episcopal Conferences are represented by their Presidents. The Council has the task of coordinating cooperation among Europe’s local Churches.
