Card. Dziwisz: John Paul II fought against the crime of pedophilia in the Church
The emerging opinions that John Paul II was sluggish in guiding the Church's response to the sexual abuse of minors by some clerics are prejudicial and contradict the historical facts. The Pope was shocked. Youth ministry, pastoral care of families and prevention of abuse of minors are the main topics of the 380th Plenary Assembly of the Polish Bishops’ Conference that is taking place on 25 and 26 September in Plock, in connection with the jubilee of the 450th anniversary of the death of St. Stanislaus Kostka, who was born in Rostkowo, in the diocese of Plock.
Fr. Martin Michalíček, New Secretary General of CCEE
Fr Martin Michalíček is the new Secretary General of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE). Late in the morning the Presidents of Europe’s Bishops’ Conferences, gathered Poznań (13-16) for their annual Plenary Assembly (13-16 September), elected him for a five-year term (with immediate effect). Fr Martin Michalíček succeeds Duarte da Cunha, who concluded a second five-year term. The CCEE President, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, Archbishop of Genoa, along with the Vice-presidents, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, his Grace Mgr Stanisław Gądecki, Archbishop of Poznań, and the Presidents of Europe’s Bishops’ Conferences, thanked Fr Duarte da Cunha for his dedication to leading the CCEE Secretariat and Fr Martin Michalíček for his readiness to serve the Church in Europe.
Celebrations in Poznan of the 1050th anniversary of the first bishopric in Poland
The jubilee celebrations were held on 22-24 June under the motto “Poznan. Christ and us”. They were presided over by the papal legate Cardinal Dominik Duka, Archbishop of Prague and Primate of the Czech Republic. The culminating moment of the three-day celebrations was the Eucharist, on June 23, on the square in front of the Poznan Cathedral, during which the message of Pope Francis was read. Several dozen bishops participated in it, including Apostolic Nuncio to Poland Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki, Archbishop Marek Jedraszewski and Archbishop Wojciech Polak.
Polish Bishops: the need for service to marriage and the family as well as people in non-sacramental relationships
The Polish Bishops’ Conference on 379th Plenary Meeting, on June 8, adopted the „Pastoral Guidelines for the Exhortation Amoris Laetitia”. Bishops emphasize the need to serve the engaged, spouses and families as well as people living in irregular relationships according to the pastoral criteria proposed by Pope Francis: acceptance, accompaniment, discernment and integration. The document does not address the issue of holy communion for people living in non-sacramental relationships.
