Message for 2016 World Day of the Sick presented in Vatican
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis’ message for the 2016 World Day of the Sick was officially presented at a press conference in the Holy See’s Press Office on Thursday. The main speaker was Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Workers, who reminded his listeners that the main Eucharistic celebration of this year's Day of the Sick (marked annually on February 11th) will take place at Nazareth in the Holy Land.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis said on Thursday that some organisations at the service of human life “are more interested in the economic side than working for the common good. He also warned that human nature nowadays is increasingly reduced to a malleable material that can be molded to any design and said the first thing to safeguard is our own humanity. His comments came in an address to participants at the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
Euro parliament: IS crimes labelled as ‘genocide’
(Vatican Radio) The European parliament on Thursday passed a resolution that labelled as ‘genocide’ the systematic mass murder of religious minorities by the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group in Iraq and Syria. Passed overwhelmingly by a show of hands, the resolution urged the international community to take action to protect all religious and minority groups against IS attacks. Lars Adaktusson from Sweden is the member of the European parliament (MEP) who spearheaded this debate and resolution and speaking after it was passed he explained to Susy Hodges why it is so important to classify the atrocities of the IS group as ‘genocide.’

This year’s Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season have taken on a special connotation and colour, occurring during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis marked the beginning of the church's Lenten journey by sending off several hundred religious and diocesan priests on their own special path as "Missionaries of Mercy" in local dioceses and parishes. At the Feb. 10 Ash Wednesday Mass, the Pope officially commissioned 762 priests from around the world to go out as special Missionaries of Mercy, empowering them to forgive even the sins that are reserved for the Holy See to pardon.
