(Vatican Radio) Veronica Scarisbrick, our correspondent covering the papal visit to Mexico looks at the long-standing devotion by the Mexican faithful to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose shrine will be visited by Pope Francis on Saturday. She retraces the bitter persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico during a large part of the 19th century when anti-clericalism was enshrined in the nation’s constitution for many decades.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis heads to the rough, crime-ridden neighborhood of Ecatepec - part of Mexico City’s suburbs - to celebrate Mass with people “on the periphery” on Sunday. The day will be in stark contrast to Saturday, when the Pope met Mexican government and civic authorities at the National Palace and later, bishops, at the grandiose Cathedral of the Assumption, and celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis flies to the Cuban capital on Friday for an unprecedented meeting with the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill. The private conversation between the two leaders will take place at Havana airport and is expected to last for a couple of hours, after which Pope Francis will continue onto Mexico City at the start of his pastoral visit to that Latin American nation.
Pope visits pediatric hospital in Mexico City
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Sunday visited the “Federico Gómez” Pediatric Hospital in Mexico City. He told the children " I ask God to bless you, and to accompany you and your families, and all those people who work in this home and try to ensure that your smiles grow day by day." The hospital was inaugurated in 1943 and it was visited by Pope St John Paul II on his journey to Mexico in 1979.

Ukraine: political turmoil adds to ongoing eastern crisis
(Vatican Radio) Germany and France have urged Ukraine to overcome political turmoil and move ahead with reforms needed to revive the economy and carry out the Minsk peace agreement amid reports of new deadly clashes in the east. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault came to Kiev at a time when the country faces its biggest political crisis since the ouster of the pro-Russian president after bloody protests in 2014.
UAE announces ministers for happiness, tolerance
(Vatican Radio) It sounds a bit New Age, but the United Arab Emirates has just appointed state ministers for happiness, tolerance and youth. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the UAE prime minister who is also the ruler of Dubai, announced the new lineup on Wednesday via his official Twitter account. The new institution was established in the context of the broader reorganization of governmental structures created since the Country was established, 44 years ago.
Pope Francis: in Mexico as missionary of mercy and peace
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis delivered the first major address of his visit to Mexico on Saturday, to the nation’s civil authorities and the corps of diplomats present for the occasion. In his remarks, the Holy Father described himself once again as “a missionary of mercy and of peace,” and also as, “a son who wishes to pay homage to his mother, the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe, and place himself under her watchful care.”
Aid Workers Concerned Over Refugee Crisis At Greece-Macedonia Border
(Vatican Radio) Aid workers have warned of a humanitarian crisis at the Greece-Macedonian border after Macedonia effectively closed its borders to most refugees. Authorities link that move to decision by other Balkan countries to cap the number of migrants allowed entry, after Austria announced it would allow maximum 3,200 migrants to enter the country. In Athens people demonstrated against Austria's move, but that has done little to ease tensions at the border.
