US expert: Religion powerful moral advocate on refugee crisis, climate
(Vatican Radio) What can interreligious dialogue contribute to combating climate change? A lot according to the U.S. State Department’s Special Representative for Religion and Global Affairs, Shaun Casey. In Part II of a wide ranging interview with Vatican Radio’s Tracey McClure, Casey recounted his involvement in the 30 November - 12 December 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, and how his office was intrigued to see the participation of so many religious groups.
Aid Workers Concerned Over Refugee Crisis At Greece-Macedonia Border
(Vatican Radio) Aid workers have warned of a humanitarian crisis at the Greece-Macedonian border after Macedonia effectively closed its borders to most refugees. Authorities link that move to decision by other Balkan countries to cap the number of migrants allowed entry, after Austria announced it would allow maximum 3,200 migrants to enter the country. In Athens people demonstrated against Austria's move, but that has done little to ease tensions at the border.
Russia denies creating massive wave of Syrian refugees
(Vatican Radio) Russia has denied that it is targeting civilians in Syria amid fresh accusations that Moscow's military intervention in that country has displaced more than half a million Syrians since September, while 2016 is expected to see even more Syrians flooding Europe than the record numbers seen last year. Turkish and American leaders have accused Russia of using refugees from Syria as a geopolitical tool to further undermine stability in Turkey, the European Union, and the NATO military alliance.
