Twenty seven years of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate has had crucial significance for the Church and the world, in the context of his teaching, as well as in the context of the social impact – Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference and Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE), wrote in a letter addressed to the presidents of the Episcopates of the world asking for support for the initiative of proclaiming St. John Paul II a doctor of the Church. Furthermore, Archbishop Gądecki asked the Presidents of the Episcopates of Europe to support the initiative to proclaim the Polish Pope a co-patron of Europe.

Archbishop, you witnessed the moment when Karol Wojtyła was elected to the See of Peter. Could you please tell us a few words about the circumstances in which it happened and your reaction to the election?
In fact, we were many in St. Peter's Square then, including many Poles. I was fortunate to be there with others and to witness this unique, historic moment when Karol Wojtyła's name was announced. Apart from the normal emotion that accompanies such moments, the first thought that came to my mind was: This is something that happens only once in a thousand years for the Christian Nation, for the Poles, and it may never happen again.

“I asked for permission to send an invitation to the Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences of all of Europe to support the initiative that I had addressed to Pope Francis to proclaim St. John Paul II Patron of Europe and Doctor of the Church. I have received such permission” – said Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference and Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) during the meeting of the Presidency of the CCEE on December 1-3 in Bratislava.

During the diocesan celebrations in the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity and St. Anna in Prostyn, the crown and nimbus blessed by Pope Francis were imposed on the miraculous statue of the Holy Trinity, called the Throne of Grace. The ceremony took place on May 27, at the end of the octave for the 500th anniversary of the apparitions of St. Anna in Prostyn.
