This year’s Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season have taken on a special connotation and colour, occurring during the current Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis marked the beginning of the Church's Lenten journey by sending out several hundred religious and diocesan priests from around the world as "Missionaries of Mercy" to their local churches and communities. At the Feb. 10 Ash Wednesday Mass in Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pope officially commissioned 762 priests with the task, empowering them to forgive even the sins that are reserved for the Holy See to pardon. The original plan of the Holy Father was to have just 800 Missionaries of Mercy. But with overwhelming requests from around the world, he ended up choosing over 1,000. Of these, 762 were specially invited to the Vatican for the official ceremony.

Bishops of Congo call on nation to embrace love and forgiveness
Congo Brazzaville's Catholic newspaper, “La Semaine Africaine” reports this week that the Bishops of Congo Brazzaville, at the end of their Plenary Assembly, have released a pastoral statement calling on the people of the Republic of Congo to live their “Christian vocation as witnesses of God’s mercy to others.” This, the Bishops emphasise, “means showing God’s forgiveness, compassion, tenderness and love, to build a fairer Congo, where unity, reconciliation, dialogue, harmony and sharing take precedence over selfishness, hatred, rancour, vindictiveness and divisions,” the Bishops emphasise.
Prison chaplains meet to discuss problems of minorities in jails
(Vatican Radio) The International Prison Chaplains Association, or IPCA, is holding a European conference here in Rome next week to reflect on the particular challenges facing minorities within the prison system. IPCA is an international, ecumenical network providing support to chaplains, both lay and ordained, working in many different contexts in countries right across the globe.
Cardinal Onaiyekan calls for national spiritual rebirth
The Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan has called for a sincere, moral and national, spiritual rebirth in Nigeria. The Cardinal has described the spiritual rebirth required as an effective antidote for the nation’s socio-economic and moral challenges. The Cardinal made the call in his homily at the opening Mass of the first plenary meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) held recently at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Garki, Abuja. The theme of the week-long plenary was, The Catholic Church: Promoting Mercy, Social Justice and Peace.
