Twenty seven years of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate has had crucial significance for the Church and the world, in the context of his teaching, as well as in the context of the social impact – Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference and Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE), wrote in a letter addressed to the presidents of the Episcopates of the world asking for support for the initiative of proclaiming St. John Paul II a doctor of the Church. Furthermore, Archbishop Gądecki asked the Presidents of the Episcopates of Europe to support the initiative to proclaim the Polish Pope a co-patron of Europe.

The Eucharist on the occasion of the Solemnity of Our Lady of Czestochowa was presided in the Sanctuary of Jasna Gora by Archbishop Wojciech Polak, Primate of Poland, and concelebrated by many bishops and international guests i.a. Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In the Holy Mass participated tens of thousands of pilgrims.

80,000 pilgrims participated in the solemn Eucharist in Marian Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska presided by Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, retired prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and co-celebrated by Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski, metropolitan of Cracow. The Holy Mass and the procession concluded the celebrations of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which lasted the whole week.
