The 51st International Eucharistic Congress taking place from Jan. 24-31, in the central Philippine city of Cebu, has as its main theme, “The Eucharist as Mission”. Thousands of delegates and participants, among them the clergy, religious and lay people, are taking part in this event to promote the awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church.
Caritas: “complete climate of fear” in Burundi
(Vatican Radio) An official for Caritas Internationalis said the tit-for-tat killings seen in Burundi over the past months between supporters and opponents of President Pierre Nkurunziza have created “a complete climate of fear” among the population. The violence began in Burundi last April when President Nkurunzia announced he would seek a third term. Over 400 people have died and around 250,000 have fled abroad and many fear that the nation could be slowly sliding back into another civil war. Patrick Nicholson is the Communications Director for Caritas Internationalis and he spoke to Susy Hodges from the Burundian capital, Bujumbura.

(Vatican Radio) Vatican Weekend for January 30, 2016 features a brief history of 'Celam', the Episcopal Council for Latin America and the Caribbean, a reflection by Monsignor Peter Fleetwood of the Liverpool Archdiocese in England, by the title of 'God's Friends' for his series 'Why Bother? Staying Catholic Despite it All'. This is followed by a guided tour of St.Peter's Basilica with Carmelite Father Reginald Foster.

(Vatican Radio) Vatican Weekend for January 31, 2016 features our weekly selection of readings and reflections for the Sunday Gospel in a programme presented by Jill Bevilacqua by the title of 'There's More in the Sunday Gospel than Meets the Eye'. This is followed by a conversation with well known author and preacher Dominican Father Timothy Radcliffe.
Pope Francis: Sinners, yes; but never corrupt
(Vatican Radio) Let us pray to God that the weakness that leads us to sin will never lead to corruption. This was the theme of Pope Francis homily at daily Mass on Friday morning, a theme he has taken up many times. Beginning with the first reading, which tells the story of David and Bathsheba, the Pope distinguished between regular sinners and those who are corrupt. Unlike regular sinners, the corrupt do not feel the need for forgiveness.
