(Vatican Radio) “It is very likely that Pope Francis will visit the concentration camp at Auschwitz,” during his visit to Kraków, according to Father Federico Lombardi, S.J., the head of the Holy See Press Office. He noted that every Pope who has gone to Kraków has later travelled to the notorious World War II death camp.

80,000 pilgrims participated in the solemn Eucharist in Marian Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska presided by Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, retired prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and co-celebrated by Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski, metropolitan of Cracow. The Holy Mass and the procession concluded the celebrations of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which lasted the whole week.

We also thank the millions of Poles - including family communities and movements - who are praying for Pope Francis, the Cardinals, the Bishops and people who will take part in the Synod. We encourage everyone to continue praying for the synod, in which - at the request of the Holy Father - Bishops from Poland will participate with joy and care for the families.

Founded by St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, with the approval of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, the Benedict XVI Centre for Religion and Society brings together existing strands of research and seeks to foster new projects with partner researchers and organizations.
