There is great enthusiasm in Italy surrounding the upcoming World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, according to Italian Ambassador to Poland Alessandro De Pedys.

The fact that Italians will be the second-largest group of WYD pilgrims, after Poles, speaks for itself, Ambassador De Pedys has told PAP.

A lot of attention is being devoted in Italy to the pope and to Poland as well, because a lot of Italians visit Poland also for religious reasons – for example, many Italian tourists go to the Jasna Gora national shrine in Czestochowa (southern Poland), De Pedys said.

Managing such a big mass of people during WYD will be an organisational and logistical challenge, and the Italian embassy is in full readiness for the event, according to the ambassador.

De Pedys also pointed out that the Italians coming to Poland for WYD were not a group of football hooligans but young people of whom many were members of Catholic organisations, so he did not expect any trouble.

About 100,000 Italians are expected in Poland for World Youth Day.

World Youth Day 2016 will take place in and around Krakow on July 26-31. Pope Francis will take part in the event on July 27-31. (PAP)
