On Saturday, September 30th, at 10 a.m., an ordinary public consistory will be held in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, during which the Holy Father Francis will present birettas and cardinal rings to the new cardinals, among whom is a Pole – the Metropolitan of Lodz, Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś.

„Cardinals are the closest collaborators of the Bishop of Rome. This is their main function,” said Cardinal-elect Grzegorz Ryś. He added that it is a „unique distinction and surprise” for him that Pope Francis wants him in this group.

„With or without cardinal dignity, I listen very carefully to every Peter in the Church and now to Pope Francis. Suppose he expects closer cooperation on my part than before. In that case, I tell him I am ready,” the cardinal elect pointed out.

The new cardinals are twelve diocesan bishops, two apostolic nuncios, and three heads of dicasteries. Eighteen future cardinals under 80 are eligible to participate in the eventual conclave; three are over 80 – they will no longer be electors of the new pope.

On October 4th at 9 a.m., in St. Peter’s Square, the new cardinals will con-celebrate Mass with Pope Francis for the opening of the first session of the Synod on Synodality.
